Resources for all!

Since I started my transition into a career as a developer I’ve been compiling a ton of bookmarks to help me along the way (maybe more than I need). So I thought I’d share the ones I found useful.

Pre-Work

If you are thinking of going through an immersive bootcamp, I would recommend to check out the resources each specific bootcamp offers. A lot of them offer free content and require you to complete a certain amount of pre-work before you even start, so you might as well kill two birds with one stone. Here are some other sites I found helpful:

Code Academy — One of the O.G.s out there. Code Academy offers a ton of free information and great for beginners to work with different languages.

They offer a mobile app, a “Pro” version boasting 1,800 hours of curriculum for $20/month as well as a free version.

SoloLearn I was turned onto SoloLearn from my fellow cohort mate John Speck. He quickly confronted me to a “coding challenge.” You pick your language and answer the same five questions, the person who answered the most correctly wins and earn points. (Points help you skip curriculum if you’re stuck or know it already. Maybe other things too?) They also offer certificates if you complete their courses.

SoloLearn has a website and mobile app. They also offer a “Pro” version for $7/month or $48/year.

Codewars.com is another popular one that is all about little challenges, leveling up, honor and kata. Check out their wiki.

you can link to your github or sign up with email.

While you’re in the thick of it…

During my bootcamp experience I didn’t have much time to focus on any other curriculum other than what the school provided. They hose ya’ down remember? overload ya’ on purpose. So if you’re like me it might be easier to stick with that and get through it. BUT I will list a couple helpful resources that should be widely known already but if they’re new for you that’s great too!

Tech Interview Prep

HackerRank.com seems to be one of the big dogs in Tech Interview Prep with some companies even using HackerRank as their platform for white boarding.

LeetCode.com is another popular one to stretch your Algo skills.

Job Search / Networking

LinkedIn.com LinkedIn is probably going to be your golden standard for connecting and posting with potential employers. Boost that profile up and join a bunch of groups you find interest in.

Meetup.com — How does anything get done? Knowing your shit and NETWORKING. You know your shit, now get out there and meet some people! make some new friends! meet potential employers!

Continued Learning/Blogs

Dan Abramov’s Blog (overreacted.io) — I personally find myself going back to it for pointers and a calming voice during times of duress!

JustJavaScript — Emails from Dan Abramov and Maggie Appleton going through JavaScript fundamentals.

FreeCodeCamp.orgfreeCodeCamp has a ton of free resources and a wonderful weekly email. They also published a cool article earlier this year listing 450 free Ivy League Courses online. check them out!

Udemy one of your goto spots for any kind of tutorial about any kind of knowledge you wanna buff up on.

I plan on adding more to this as I come across things I find interesting and useful for me.

A lot of these can work interchangeably at different points in your journey (i.e. continued learning could be done as pre-work and vice versa) I just wanted to put a loose format on them to reference quickly.

Enjoy and I’d love to hear if you have any recommendations of your own!
